Big things are on the horizon for the Ultimate Hike, and as 2010 is drawing closer and closer, our efforts are stepping up a bit.
First off, the organizations website www.uhfac.org is undergoing more and more changes as the days go by. Now included are the short form biographies for both Ty and myself, with more team members to be featured soon.
More content is coming for our youtube channel, so please stay tuned.
And now for something to you the readers... a chance to help us make a difference.
So Ty will take it from here.

On April 9, 2011, The Ultimate Hike For A Cure will launch another attempt at the goal of hiking from Michigan to Alaska. But this time, Ty isn't going to go alone! Do you want to go with him?
The new launching point will either be from Michigan State University in East Lansing or from the state capitol building in Lansing. From there, we will head due north to St Ignace and then go west along the northern tier of the US. We will then head north into Canada in either Montana or Idaho.
If you think you have the desire to do this and you have the drive to do it, I will need a few things from you by October 1, 2010:
1. Full legal name
2. Address, phone number, & e-mail
3. DOB
4. Medical history & any existing medical issues
5. Medical release from your doctor
6. Proof of medical insurance or proof of financial ability to cover any medical bills incurred during the hike

10. An essay, no more than 3 paragraphs, explaining why you should be considered for the Hike
Team (this must be sent to ultimatehike@gmail.com, no paper essays will be considered)
I need these things so I know who I am dealing with. The UHFAC does not provide any medical or life insurance, nor do we provide any kind of compensation. This is a VOLUNTARY position with a non-profit organization.
All information provided to the UHFAC, will remain confidential and will not be used in any capacity, other than to conduct background checks.

Wikipedia
So apparently the "trollers" over at Wikipedia don't seem to understand what it is that the Ultimate Hike For A Cure is really here for... and they keep deleting our page.
Considering this, we will more than likely add the information from the Wikipedia page somewhere else on the web so that it can be seen by the rest of the world.
More as it develops.

Developments So Far
So it's been a couple of days since the last posting here, and there have been a couple of developments for us.
The first is that the Ultimate Hike now has a YouTube page. More stuff to go on it soonish...
The second is that we have started talks with eFoodsDirect, as a possible supplier and perhaps advertising partner for the hike.
More as it develops.

Welcome
Welcome to the Ultimate Hike For A Cure blog. My name is Ty Hover and I am the founder and chairman of the UHFAC.
This non-profit organization was started in 2007, as a way to help bring attention to diabetes research and the plight of diabetics everywhere. It was also begun, to help show diabetics that you shouldn't allow this disease prevent you from doing anything.
I also hope that it will inspire others to join or begin their own projects to help fight this insidious disease that over 25 million americans suffer with each moment of each day.
I started this because I have suffered with type I diabetes for the past 30 years and I was tired of seeing so much focus be given to so many other terrible diseases and problems... but not enough focus being given to the leading cause of blindness, limb amputation, and kidney failure. I was also troubled by watching so many "new" and "old" diabetics give up or decide they couldn't do anything, because they have this disease.
This is where I decided I needed to step up and do something.
After much thought and debate. I decided to follow some advice my parents had been giving me every since I was younger... do what you love to do, to help make a difference. So, I decided, because I am an avid outdoorsman, I would backpack from Michigan to Alaska. I love to backpack and camp and I have also always wanted to see western Canada and Alaska. I also have enjoyed doing charity work. So why not combine them all!!!
Now, a first attempt was made in March 2009. But, due to a combination of logistical, financial, and physical problems, I was forced to abandon my quest 482 miles north of Detroit (40 miles south of Wawa, Ont.). I then had to be taken to the Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Mi.
But, this setback did not destroy my resolve. If anything, it made it stronger and has made me want to reach my goal that much more.
This brings us to now.
Currently, I have assembled a magnificent team of people to help me in reaching my goals and get the word out. I have also decided to change the starting point from Detroit to East Lansing, Mi, on the campus of Michigan State University. from there we will head north to St Ignace, Mi. But, rather than continue north and try to navigate the north shore of Lake Superior, we will head due west and skirt the northern border of the US, moving into Canada in either Montana or Idaho.
Myself or my Exec VP of Media Relations, Wess Grigg, will be blogging updates here as the launch date of April 9, 2011 approaches. I hope you will continue to follow the progress of the UHFAC and please, tell others about what it is we are trying to do here.

Thank You,
